Making our recruitment and admissions processes more inclusive and welcoming to a broad spectrum of students is an oft discussed topic. However, too often, that conversation is contained to particular corners of the academy…or is not had in the frankest terms possible.

When I am looking for honest and thoughtful input on this topic and many others, one of the first folks I think about is Dr. Michael Benitez, dean of diversity and inclusion at the University of Puget Sound. Michael has a long track record of success in this space, and is a straight shooter in the best ways possible. I know you’ll enjoy hearing from him.

As some of you may know, I have been engaged with AACRAO’s Student Identity Workgroup. The Workgroup is creating a report, based in the most current understanding around the needs of Trans students, that will serve as a guide to admissions, registrars, and technology vendors as we work to create more inclusive identity management in higher education.

It is within the context of this work that I started running into one name over, and over, and over, and over again in the peer reviewed literature: Dr. Genny Beemyn. Dr Beemyn is one of the foremost and prolific researcher in the area of the needs of Trans students in higher education settings. This interview was such a pleasure. I can’t tell you how much I learned from Dr. Beemyn.

For our first guest, I couldn’t think of anyone better than Scott Jaschik. Scott is the Managing Editor and one of three co-founders of the publication, Inside Higher Ed. Let’s get this straight right now: Scott Jaschik is my “do your homework” hero. He came to our interview SO PREPARED for everything I threw at him. Of course, the main focus of our time together was Inside Higher Ed’s Survey of Admissions Directors. However, he had knowledge and insights to share on even the most derivative of topics. I hope you enjoy this CLASSIC interview with Scott Jaschik.
